About Our Cause

A Brief History

Over time, Battle of the Valleys has become one of Saginaw Valley State University's proudest and most meaningful traditions. The event seized the interest of the football rivalry between Saginaw Valley and Grand Valley State University to include a charitable fundraising competition the week of the football game. After 16 years of competition, the GVSU Student Senate voted to end their involvement in the charitable fundraising competition. Read more here.

In spring 2019, SVSU's Student Association reconfigured and continued this event on their own —  titled “Battle of the Valley,” taking place in 2020 and 2021. Grand Valley's rescindment of their participation has not and will not hinder the philanthropic spirit of our Cardinal family. We will battle on for years to come. Read more here.

A New Era

The Grand Valley State University Student Senate voted on December 3rd, 2020 to reinstate the philanthropic and competitive element of Battle of the Valleys. Following this, Saginaw Valley State University's Student Association voted to re-adopt the agreement on December 7th, 2020.

On The Horizon

In September 2021, GVSU and SVSU will compete again for the first time since 2018. With a new rules agreement and a new association, it is hopeful that the competition will continue for years to come. SVSU will raise money for the Children's Grief Center of the Great Lakes Bay Region. Grand Valley will raise money for I Understand, Love Heals. The check reveal will take place on October 2nd, 2021 at the SVSU vs GVSU football game.
